Fungus Gnats are some of the most annoying insects when it comes to house plants!
šæ What are fungus gnats?
Tiny black flying insects, similar to fruit flies.
They live in the soilĀ of your houseplants.
Adults are harmless, but their larvaeĀ (baby gnats) can be a problem.
š Why are they bad?
Fungus gnat larvae feed on organic matterĀ in the soil ā sometimes including plant roots, especially in seedlings or weak plants.
Too many can stress or damageĀ your plants.
Adults fly around and can be really annoying indoors.
š§ Why do they show up?
Damp soilĀ is their happy place!
Overwatering or poor drainage gives them a perfect environmentĀ to lay eggs.
Theyāre especially common in peat-based soilsĀ or ones that stay moist too long.
š« How to get rid of them:
Let the soil dry outĀ more between waterings (kills larvae).
Use yellow sticky trapsĀ to catch flying adults (availale for purchase under "Pest Control").
Sprinkle cinnamon powderĀ on the soil ā itās a natural fungus fighter.
Bottom watering (watering from a tray under the pot) helps keep the top layer dry, making it harder for gnats to thrive.
Try a soil drench with Hydrogen Peroxide for the quickest results:
